Until recently it was quite easy to choose between ethernet or WiFi.
Ethernet offered faster connection, but it was more restrictive in terms of location. You have to be a certain distance away from the router, and you can’t just pick your laptop up and move, because you’re connected to the internet via a cable.
WiFi, on the other hand, gives you the flexibility to move into a meeting room, pop to a coffee shop or go sit outside. But, the downside, was that you would have to put up with slower internet speed,
So there was a trade-off between speed and convenience. Because of this, most commercial spaces ended up using both WiFi and ethernet, giving staff speed when they wanted it and flexibility when they needed that too.
However, flash forward a few years and WiFi has evolved. It’s become faster and more reliable, which means many spaces decide not to bother with ethernet.
If you’re wondering which is right for your business, WiFi or ethernet, our WiFi consultants are here to help. In this article, we’re going to take a look at the difference between ethernet and WiFi.
1.Performance Differences
Ethernet: Ethernet is definitely faster, even with advancements in WiFi. The standard Cat6A ethernet cable offers 10gbps and they consistently deliver that. Ethernet cables are less susceptible to interference and low latency.
WiFi: The fastest WiFi (6E) can reach speeds of a few gigabits per second. A big difference. Also, WiFi is prone to interference, which could be due to the layout of your office, obstacles blocking the signal or interference from other devices.
2.Security Differences
Ethernet: With ethernet, data can only be accessed by devices that are physically connected to the network (with an ethernet cable). This means the data remains secure, as interception is almost impossible.
WiFi: WiFi is not quite as secure. WiFi broadcasts through airwaves, making it more susceptible to interception. That being said, most WiFi networks are secured, using encryption to protect data. But, the level of security depends on your set-up.
Deciding Between The Two
Our WiFi consultants can help with that…
For most spaces and typical uses, there is no reason that WiFi wouldn’t suffice. Modern WiFi hardware offers good speeds and reliable performance. Plus, the wireless connection makes life a lot easier.
That being said, there is still a time and a place for ethernet. For gamers, or any one streaming super HD content, an ethernet connection might be the better option.
